Kitchen cabinets — they’re something you use multiple times, every day. Are yours working for you? Whether you’re about to enter into a big kitchen renovation or are just looking to update your cabinetry, there are a lot of factors to consider when choosing kitchen cabinets.

Cabinets are one of the larger investment elements of a new or updated kitchen, but they’re meant to withstand lots of wear and tear over many, many years. The RSI kitchen design team is here to help demystify the process and make sure you get the most for your investment.

What Should I Factor Into My Cabinet Decision?

Invest in high-quality cabinetry

As we mentioned before, kitchen cabinets should stay with you (or future owners) for a long time. They’re an invaluable part of your kitchen and home, so it’s worth investing in cabinets that are well-crafted. These cabinets are organized well and increase your kitchen’s efficiency.

These high-quality cabinets are also more likely to have ample and functional storage, which leads us to …

Consider the storage setup

Choose cabinets that have a nice drawer system. Full-extension drawer glides with solid wood dovetail drawer boxes will last a lifetime.

In addition, pay attention to — and adjust your budget accordingly — the cabinetry interior storage. It should be well-thought-out and make sense for heavy use. There are many useful storage accessories available in all cabinet lines today, such as spice drawer inserts, cutlery trays, and waste-bin pull-outs.

Most of these accessories are on display in our St. Louis kitchen showroom, so take the time to look and feel to see which ones can make your life easier.

Choose a finish that fits your lifestyle

While white cabinetry will always be in style, think about your lifestyle before choosing. White shows everything — dirt, grease, knicks and chips.

This may be just fine if there are just adults in the house, but families with small kids might consider a finish that’s more forgiving. Warm Wood Cabinets

Think about your style vs. trends

Cabinetry finishes are trending away from grey paint and towards warmer wood tones — we’re all ready to leave the depressing industrial greys behind with the economic recession! If you want your cabinets to look nice and in-style for the long haul, we recommend steering away from the grey trend.

In terms of door design, flat-panel doors are still popular and simple shaker doors or those with a recessed center panel are also on-trend. Our kitchen design team is also seeing a move toward slab doors in textured laminate finishes.

(Contemporary has finally made it to the Midwest, and we’re very excited about it!)

Ultimately, your kitchen cabinets are a long-term investment, but your process for choosing the right ones doesn’t have to be painful! Our kitchen design team is available to walk you through your options and needs to ensure you’re making a decision that will make you happy.

Also once you select your cabinets, know that we’re always here to help you choose the right hardware and adjust the cabinets to fit your needs.
