Scandinavian Simplicity

The remodel of this 1968 Ladue home transformed a contemporary kitchen into a warm, functional space that reflects the homeowners’ love of travel and appreciation for Japandi design; a refined blend of Scandinavian simplicity and Japanese minimalism. While the kitchen had been remodeled approximately 25 years ago, its dated layout and finishes no longer suited the family’s lifestyle or aesthetic.

Working within the home’s existing footprint, one of the project’s greatest challenges was improving functionality without removing the structural wall between the kitchen and dining room. The original oversized island dominated the space, making the kitchen feel cramped and limiting circulation. By reducing the island’s size, relocating the cooktop, and repositioning the dishwasher to the other side of the sink, the new layout creates distinct work zones that allow multiple people to cook and prep comfortably at the same time.

To further enhance openness, bulky built-in cabinetry was removed and replaced with a countertop workspace, creating a lighter, more expansive feel. An underutilized wall near the breakfast table was transformed into 15-inch-deep floor-to-ceiling pantry storage, significantly increasing capacity without overwhelming the room. New hardwood flooring was seamlessly integrated with the adjacent rooms and refinished throughout, reinforcing a continuous visual flow that makes the space feel larger.

The material palette embodies the clean, natural character of Japandi design. Wynnbrooke full-access cabinetry features textured Battlecreek Oak laminate with thoughtfully oriented horizontal grain on the base cabinets and vertical grain on the tall pantry cabinets, complemented by crisp white wall cabinetry. Viatera Etude quartz countertops and full-height backsplashes provide a sophisticated, low-maintenance surface, while concealed under-cabinet plug mold strips preserve the uninterrupted beauty of the quartz. Brushed satin nickel Top Knobs Kinney hardware, a Blanco Formera Super Single sink, and a Flusso Ziel faucet with a Moen instant hot water dispenser complete the streamlined aesthetic.

Designed for a busy family with four boys, the kitchen also incorporates innovative appliance technology with fully integrated panels for a seamless appearance. A Thermador Freedom induction cooktop offers advanced pot-detection technology, while versatile Zephyr dual-zone undercounter refrigerator/freezer drawers can function as either refrigeration or freezer space depending on the family’s needs. A Thermador microwave and speed oven provide added convenience for fast-paced daily living.

The finished kitchen is a thoughtful balance of beauty and performance; an inviting, highly functional space that feels brighter, larger, and perfectly tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle and modern design sensibilities.
